Wingate Sweeps AC Softball Team

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Sarah Carleton hit a two-run homer and Grace Cunningham hit a solo homer to lead Wingate to a 3-2 victory in the second game and a sweep of Anderson College Thursday afternoon at Smethers Field. In the first game, Wingate had 16 hits and three Wingate players drove in two runs apiece to lead the Bulldogs to a 9-0 victory in five innings. Wingate is now 10-4, while Anderson falls to 8-16. Carey Bumgardner, Courtney Wagner, and Carleton all collected two RBI apiece in the first game. The Bulldogs score four runs in the first, two in the second, and two in the third. Wingate pitcher Ashley Green limited Anderson to two hits and struck out six in five innings. In the second game, Anderson scratched out a single run in the second against former Anderson College pitcher Lauren Powell. Kristen Price doubled with one out and scored on a throwing error. Anderson pitcher Stephanie Griffis blanked the Bulldogs for the first five innings. But in the sixth, Bumgardner led off with a single and scored when Carleton hit a home run over the right field fence. After Anderson left the bases loaded in the sixth, Cunningham hit a solo shot to right center to increase the Bulldog lead to 3-1. Cunningham's homer proved to be the winning hit as Anderson scored a single run in the bottom of the seventh on a leadoff walk to Brandi Elrod, a sacrifice, and a two-out single by Cindy Crosby. Powell, returning to the place where she was a first-team All-CVAC selection as a freshman, struck out three, walked three, and scattered six hits. AC Softball Season Statistics
