JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Anderson University men's basketball team closed out a two-game South Atlantic Conference road swing by suffering a 92-55 setback to Carson-Newman Saturday afternoon at Holt Fieldhouse.
Anderson fell to 16-8 overall and 12-4 in the league, while slipping into a tie for third place in the league standings with the Eagles, behind co-league leaders Wingate and Lincoln Memorial. Carson-Newman (19-5, 12-4 SAC) has won eight of its last nine and improved to 10-1 at home on the season.
The Trojans connected on just 16-of-53 from the field for their lowest shooting percentage of the season (30.2 percent) and were out-rebounded 35-31.
Junior guard Chandler Hash led the Trojans with 15 points, while senior guard Denzail Jones netted 11 points.
Carson-Newman's Ishmael Sanders led all scorers with 33 points on 11-of -22 shooting from the field, including 9-of-18 from beyond the arc. Teammate Antoine Davis poured in 26 points, as he connected on 10-of-15 from the field. Carson Brooks chipped in 14 points for the Eagles.
The Trojans took their final lead of the afternoon, at 17-16, on a 3-pointer by Jones with 11:24 left in the first half, but Carson-Newman answered by reeling off 14 straight points to take a 30-17 lead with less than nine minutes on the clock.
AU trimmed the deficit to 10 on two occasions inside the final four minutes of the half, but would get no closer, as the Eagles took a 42-31 lead to the break.
Carson-Newman built a 21-point cushion early in the second
stanza and led, 89-50, with 4:20 left in the contest.
The Trojans will honor their seniors on Wednesday, as AU closes out
its home slate by playing host to Brevard Tip-off versus the
Tornados is scheduled for 8 p.m. at the Abney Athletic
Center.
