ROCK HILL, S.C. - Anderson University senior guard Denzail Jones has been named the South Atlantic Conference men's basketball Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday.
"Denzail had a very good week," said Anderson head coach Jason Taylor. "We are very proud of him. He has been taking care of the ball very well and had six assists and just one turnover a week ago."
Jones averaged 27 points on the week, helping extend the Trojans' win streak to six games, as Anderson outpaced Conference Carolinas' foe North Greenville, 89-76, on the road last Wednesday, then defeated its third Peach Belt opponent of the season, Georgia College, 69-63, Saturday afternoon at the Abney Center.
The Tuscaloosa, Ala., native erupted for 23 second-half points en route to a season-high 37 to lead Anderson past North Greenville and followed up with a team-high 17 points in the home win over the Bobcats. Jones averaged 3.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.0 steals in the two wins.
He shot 55.2 percent (16-of-29) from the field on the week, including 63.6 percent (7-of-11) from beyond the arc and connected on 15-of-18 (83.3%) from the free throw line, including 6-of-6 inside the final three minutes versus Georgia College.
On the season, Jones leads the conference with his 22.4 points per game and is fifth in assists and 10th in steals. As of last week, the guard ranked 35th in the nation in scoring and 47th nationally in steals. He became the 10th member of AU's 1,000 point club in the win past Lenoir-Rhyne earlier this season and now stands eighth all-time in the record books.
The Trojans are on the road for three games in four days,
beginning at Limestone Wednesday night.
