Balanced Scoring Attack Lifts Anderson Past Tusculum

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. - Three Trojans reached double figures, as Anderson defeated Tusculum, 66-56, in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball Wednesday night at Pioneer Arena.

Anderson (9-4, 5-0 SAC) extended its win streak to three and evened its road record at 3-3 on the season with its sixth consecutive win past the Pioneers. Tusculum slipped to 3-10 overall and 1-4 in the league, while dropping its third decision in the last four games.

In his first career starting assignment, sophomore guard Myson Jones scored a team-high 19 points and dished out a game-high four assists, while fellow sophomore DJ McGowan added a career-best 15 points on the strength of 7-of-8 shooting from the field. Forward Bo Holston chipped in 14 points and recorded a pair of blocked shots.

Tusculum freshman forward Keith Jumper led all scorers with 22 points. Junior guard Addison Flynn added 10 points, while junior JD Miller recorded a career-high 13 rebounds.

Anderson scored five unanswered points on a Holston 3-pointer and a jumper by McGowan to take its first lead of the night at 13-12 with 13:31 left in the first half and held an 18-15 edge following a Jones 3-pointer, but Tusculum regained a brief 19-18 lead on a layup by Jumper with 9:33 left in the half.

Jones followed with a layup and the Trojans took a lead they would not relinquish on a layup by freshman Steven Faust with 6:21 on the clock.

Clinging to a narrow 28-27 lead, AU closed the final moments of the first half with back-to-back 3-pointers by Holston as the Trojans took a 34-27 lead into the locker room.

Anderson pushed out to a double-digit lead at 38-28 on a Jones free throw at the 16:43 mark, but the Pioneers answered with five straight points to cut the Trojans' lead to 38-33 with 15:17 left.

Again leading by five, at 40-35, Anderson scored 14 unanswered points to gain its largest lead of the contest, at 54-35, as McGown fueled the run with seven points.

The Trojans led by 17 points on three occasions over the final five minutes.

Anderson returns to the friendly confines of the Abney Athletic Center on Saturday, playing host to Carson-Newman, with preseason SAC favorite Wingate invading the Abney Center on Wednesday, Jan. 23. Tip-off versus the Eagles is scheduled for 4 p.m.
