Rain, Lightning Force Tie Between AU, Barton

WILSON, N.C. -- Barton College and Anderson University had to settle for a tie in their regular-season finale Sunday afternoon at Nixon Field. Barton led for the entire game until visiting Anderson tied the score at 8-8 in the top of the sixth. Anderson took a 9-8 lead in the top of the seventh, but then rain and lightning halted play for the day, resulting in an 8-8 tie after the game reverted to the last full inning competed. Anderson (25-28-1, 12-11-1) finishes fifth in the CVAC, while Barton (22-20-1, 9-13-1) finshed sixth. The CVAC Tournament begins Thursday at Nixon Field and Fleming Stadium in Wilson. Barton will open against third-seeded Pfeiffer at 1 p.m. Thursday at Fleming Stadium and Anderson will face off against fourth-seeded Erskine at 7 p.m. in Fleming Stadium. In Sunday's game, which started one hour late because of heavy rain, Barton jumped to a 4-0 lead after the first inning on a three-run home run by Kevin Brosseau, one of three players honored on "Senior Day." Brosseau was 2-for-4 and finished the series 7-for-11 with four home runs and eight RBI. Jessie Whiteside singled in two runs for Anderson in the third and Tony Graham singled home another in the fourth, closing the gap to 4-3, but Barton tallied three runs in the fourth on RBI singles by Zach Boyette and Brosseau and a sacrifice fly by Jonathan Nichols. Anderson made it 7-7 in the top of the fifth with four runs on four hits. The big blows were an RBI double by Jonathan Pitts and a three-run double by B.J. Smith. The Bulldogs regained the lead at 8-7 in the bottom half of the fifth, then Anderson tied the game at 8-8 in the sixth on a double by Kyle Lewis and a single by Whiteside. Anderson outhit the Bulldogs 12-11, led by Whiteside at 3-for-4 with 3 RBI and Smith at 2-for-3 with 3 RBI. Barton got two hits apiece from Boyette, Nichols, Brosseau and Jimmy Metzinger. Blair Carson pitched 3 2/3 innings for Anderson and Brady Peele went 2 1/3. For Barton, Matt Wingo covered the first 4 2/3 innings, followed by Justin Bye and Brent Godwin, who retired two batters apiece. Anderson University Baseball Season Statistics
