Anderson Splits Doubleheader With CVAC Leader MOC

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Chris Pitts threw seven scoreless innings to lead the Anderson University over Mount Olive 5-2 in the first game, but the visiting Trojans erupted in the second game to gain a split of a CVAC doubleheader Saturday at Anderson Memorial Stadium. In the second game, Mount Olive collected 23 hits and 28 runs in a 28-7 victory over Anderson. Anderson is now 20-23 overall and 9-8 in the CVAC, while Mount Olive, the league leader, is now 33-9 overall and 14-3. Anderson got on the scoreboard in the first inning of game one with two-out double by John Mac White that scored Tony Graham. Kyle Lewis delivered what proved to be the game-winning RBI with a two-out, two-run homer over the right field fence in the fifth inning to give the home-standing Trojans a 5-0 lead. Anderson added two more runs in the seventh when Blair Carson's single drove in Jonathan Pitts, and Josh Grubbs executed a squeeze bunt to score Carson to make it 5-0. Mount Olive scored two runs in the top of the seventh on a two-out double by Jason Sherrer that scored Dustin Richardson and Josh Carter, but Sherrer was thrown out at second base trying advance on the throw to end the inning. With two on and two out, Brandon Sheriff recorded the final out on a strikeout to earn the save. Pitts earned the win by scattering eight hits in eight innings and allowing just two runs. Judson Smith was saddled with the loss for Mount Olive. Jonathan Pitts, White, and Carson had two hits in for plate appearances for Anderson, while Carter led Mount Olive by going 2-for-3 with a run scored. Mount Olive's bats erupted in game two with three home runs in the first inning by Stephen Nordan, Erik Lovett, and Josh Harrison to make it 5-0. Lovett and Harrison hit two home runs apiece in the game. Mount Olive batted around in the second, fifth, and sixth innings. Gib Bethea took the loss for Anderson. Darrell Ellis allowed five runs and three hits in five innings to put up the win. Anderson was led offensively by Ed Johnson, who was 1-for-2 with two runs scored, and by Alex Roberson, who hit his first collegiate home run, a two-run blast to left in his only at bat. Mount Olive was led by Lovett, who was 4-for-5 with 10 RBI, and by Carter, who was 4-for-4 with four RBI. The two teams will play the third game of the series at 1 p.m. Sunday at Anderson Memorial Stadium. Anderson University Baseball Season Statistics
