AU Sweeps Knights To Even CVAC Record

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Gib Bethea tossed a complete game, scattered 10 hits, and allowed just one earned run to lead Anderson to a 9-2 victory over St. Andrews Presbyterian in the second game and a sweep of a CVAC doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Anderson Memorial Stadium. In the first game, the Trojans collected 20 hits on their way to a 12-6 victory. The sweep improves Anderson to 17-20 overall and 7-7 in the CVAC. St. Andrews now stands at 12-23, 3-11. In the first game, the Trojans got on the scoreboard in the first inning with two runs on three hits. But the Knights answered in the top of the second with a two-run single by Ritchie Priest to tie the game at 2. In the bottom of the second, the Trojans scored three runs on back-to-back doubles by Josh Grubbs and B.J. Smith for a 5-2 lead. Leading 6-4, Anderson added three runs in the seventh when Smith drove in two runs with a single, then stole second and scored on a two-out single by John Mac White. Chris Pitts worked 8 2/3 innings to pick up the victory for the Trojans. Ryan Kirkman was saddled with the loss for the Knights. The Trojans were led offensively by Smith, who was 4-for-6 with four RBI and scored three times, and by White, who was 3-for-4 with two RBI. Michael Eastwood had two singles and triple in four plate appearances to lead the Knights. The Trojans out hit the Knights, 20-7. In the second game, Anderson took the lead in the second inning on a two-out single by Smith that scored Jonathan Pitts. The Knights fought back with two runs in the third on three singles and an error to make it a 2-1 game. Tony Graham doubled down the right field line to start the third inning off for the Trojans. He scored on a triple to center by Jessie Whiteside, who came home on an outfield error, to give Anderson a 3-2 lead. The Trojans added three more runs in the fourth. The highlight was a two-out, two-run homer by Graham to make it 6-2. Graham led the Trojans offensively in the second game by going 2-for-4 with two RBI and scoring three times. Ivan Rodriguez led the Knights with two hits in four at bats.
