Anderson Pounds Lander, 18-11

GREENWOOD, S.C. -- Anderson University's Kyle Lewis and Blair Carson combined for nine RBI, helping the Trojans bounce back from blowing a seven-run lead in an 18-11 non-conference victory over the Lander Bearcats Thursday evening at Legion Field. Anderson snapped Lander's five-game home winning streak, improving to 13-18. The Bearcats fall to 10-15. The Trojans built a 10-3 lead in the sixth inning, but Lander stormed back with eight runs in the seventh to go ahead. Then Anderson scored eight runs in the last two innings to win. Lewis finished with five RBI while Carson had four. The Bearcats took a 1-0 lead in the first when Jonathan Myers singled, moved to second on a ground out, stole third, and scored when the catcher's throw got past the third baseman. Myers' speed created more offense in the third when he walked, stole second and third, and scored when Gabe McCann reached second on an error. McCann advanced to third and scored on wild pitches, making it 3-0. Carson hit an RBI single in the top of the fourth, pulling the Trojans within 3-1. Anderson took a 5-3 lead in the fifth when Lewis hit a three-run triple into the right-field corner and scored on John Mac White's ground out to short. The Trojans added five runs in the sixth on two walks, a hit batsman, a three-base throwing error, an RBI bloop single by Tony Graham and a two-run single by Lewis for a seemingly safe 10-3 lead. Lander stormed back with eight runs on eight hits in the seventh to take an 11-10 lead. Hunter Ruoss started the rally with a double to deep center, Justin King had two hits in the inning, and Adam Young twice reached on errors including one that resulted in the tying and go-ahead runs. Jesse Barbaro had a two-run single while R.J. Milford, McCann and Malcolm McLeod singled home runs. Anderson's third pitcher of the inning, Brandon Sheriff, prevented further damage by striking out the last two batters with the bases loaded. Sheriff (4-1) finished the game and would become the winning pitcher. The Trojans regained a 13-11 lead in the top of the eighth against Lander reliever Andy Quick (0-1) on White's sacrifice fly and Carson's two-run bloop single to center. Anderson added five runs in the ninth on one hit, two errors, three walks, a hit batsman and a balk. Leading the Trojans at the plate were Graham, 3-for-5, three runs, RBI; B.J. Smith, 2-for-6, three runs; Lewis, 3-for-4, 5 RBI; White, 0-for-4, two RBI; Carson, 2-for-4, four RBI; and Josh Grubbs, three runs scored. For Lander, Myers was 2-for-4 with three stolen bases and three runs scored, McCann was 1-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI; Barbaro was 1-for-4 with two RBI, Ruoss went 2-for-3, and King was 2-for-4.
