AU WINS FIRST AGAINST FLEET WITH WALKOFF HEROICS

ANDERSON, SC--With the Beville Cup on the line, and a must-sweep situation at hand, Casey King stepped up to the plate during game one of the Anderson University softball teams' home finale on Wednesday night at Smethers Field; on the heels of a game-tying 2-RBI double by Amanda Johnston, the sophomore King smacked a deep homerun to left center and gave Anderson University a chance to retain the trophy capping an 8-6 comeback victory. Game two did not quite go so smoothly, as the Trojans fell in quick fashion, due to a 7 run third from the Fleet--an inning that saw two Lady Trojan pitchers and 2 errors. AU eventually would fall 11-1 in 5 innings. Amanda Johnston was sturdy at the plate all day for the Lady Trojans as she was 4-5 with 2 runs and 5 RBI on the doubleheader. Johnston, a freshman from San Luis Obispo, CA, generated the only Trojan offense to speak of in game two with her solo shot in the first. Amber Sutherland was sound in the lead-off spot as she was 3-6 with 2 runs in the two-game affair. The Lady Trojans also enjoyed a solo shot in game one from first baseman Lora Daniel. In game one, Donya Cobb, who came in to spell senior Katie Van Gieson, was credited with the win. Starter Alex Waldroup was credited with the Trojan loss in game two. The Trojans pack up their bags and head to Hartsville, SC tomorrow at noon, as they will do battle in the Conference Carolinas tournament. The Trojans drew the #10 seed and they will face-off against the #7 seeded Lees-McRae Bobcats in the double-elimination tournament.
