A WINDY SENIOR DAY ENDS IN TWO LOSSES FOR TROJANS

ANDERSON, SC--The Lady Trojans hit the ball hard on Tuesday afternoon at Smethers Field, but on a day when two standout seniors were honored in blustery conditions, most breaks went the way of the visiting Saint Andrews Lady Knights, as they took both games of a Conference Carolinas doubleheader 3-2 and 7-2. Alex Waldroup pitched a gem in the first outing, going 7 innings, striking out 6 and only walking one. But her effort was blindsided by St. Andrews lead-off batter Jasmine Dobbin, who wheeled around the bases for a fifth-inning triple, putting herself in position for Lex Cowger to squeeze her in on the next at-bat for the game-winning run. Game one began just as the Trojans had hoped, as the team came out swinging; senior Kayla Williams bombed the second pitch that she saw over the fence in left center. Right behind Williams was Meredith Knox, the shortstop did the same, and the two sluggers gave AU the early lead. But a scrappy St. Andrews team battled back, and took game one, and they would not look back. The Lady Knights led game two wire-to-wire, giving AU era leader and strikeout leader Donya Cobb trouble throughout her 4 inning appearance. Cobb was spelled by senior Katie Van Gieson. Van Gieson had great stuff, but did not get much defensive help as the Lady Trojans posted 7 errors in game two. AU will try to regroup, as they have Wednesday off, and then the seeding battle for the Conference Carolinas tournament will continue on Thursday as the Lady Trojans head to Gaffney to face Limestone. The battle against the #1 Lady Saints will start a weekend stretch that includes 4 Conference Carolinas doubleheaders in 5 days.
