Trojans drop doubleheader to Catawba

Anderson S.C. - Catawba rolled to a sweep of a softball doubleheader against host Anderson at Smethers Field on Tuesday afternoon. The Catawba Indians won by the scores of 9-3 and 16-2 to improve to 6-4. The Trojans fall to 12-7. In the opener, Catawba scored in the third on a two-single by Allie Marshall (Pleasant Garden, NC/SW Guilford HS) and added two more off an error for a 3-0 lead. Marshall doubled home a run in the fifth, but Anderson cut the margin in half with Amanda Johnson's two-run double in its half of the fifth, The Lady Indians took command of the first game with MacKenzie White's (Mt. Ulla, NC/Carson HS) two-out grand slam in the seventh to push the lead to 9-2. Meghan Cobb (Richmond, VA/Bird HS) tossed the complete game for the win. She scattered nine hits and struck out five. Catawba pounded out 17 hits to gain the sweep in the nightcap. Carly Sabat (Warren, OH/Howland HS) went 4-for-4, while White added three hits and another home run. Khourtni Hester (Waldorf, MD/McDonough HS) also homered for the Lady Indians. Cassie Markham (New Port Richey, FL/Mitchell HS) drove in a pair of runs to give Catawba the lead and White's two-run homer capped a five-run first. The Lady Indians went up 10-0 in the second with another five-run inning. Brittany Thornburg (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) had a two-run double. Jamie Wells (Hebron, MD/Mardela HS) picked up the win, allowing two runs on five hits over four innings. Marshall had two hits in each game for the Lady Indians.
