NEW ORLEANS, La. - Freshman Sherin Malone, sophomore D'Yandra Morris and junior Brooklyn Watt have each earned Division II Outdoor Track and Field All-Region honors.
The top five individuals in each event from each region earned the All-Region distinction, in addition to each of the members of the regions' top three relay teams. The regions used for this award match those used during the cross country season, and student-athletes must come from USTFCCCA member institutions.
Malone, a native of Spartanburg, S.C., claimed the accolade for her stellar efforts in the 100 meter hurdles, while Morris brought home the honor in the shot put event and Watt was consistently among the region's top performers in several throwing events, while earning the all-region award in the discus throw.
Malone set a new school record with a first-place time of 14.96 seconds in the 100 meter hurdles to help lead the Trojans to a third-place finish at the inaugural Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Championships last month. Malone also took first place in the 100 meter hurdles in a time of 15.32 seconds at the Chanticleer Classic earlier in April.
Morris placed first in the shot put with a distance of 12.27 meters at the SAC Championships, while also taking third at the Terrier Relays. She claimed 27th in the discus throw in Spartanburg and placed 12th in the hammer throw.
Watt was named SAC Women's Field Athlete of the Year at the conference championships after collecting pair of first-place finishes, a second-place finish and a seventh-place showing, including the top spot in the discus throw on the second day of the championships. She claimed the top spot in the hammer throw on the first day, while also bringing home seventh in the javelin throw. The Walhalla, S.C. native followed up by taking second place in the shot put.
Nationally, the women saw 619 separate competitors accumulate 911 total honors. The Lone Star Conference had a pair of student-athletes in Angelo State's Jordan Gray and West Texas A&M's Libby Strickland earn six honors each to top the national list. Dinesha Bean of Academy of Art, Salcia Slack of New Mexico Highlands, Danielle Williams of Johnson C. Smith and Kayon Robinson of Adams State earned five apiece.
However, none of those women led their team to the top spot on the total awards list. That honor belonged to Grand Valley State with 32 awards. Robinson's Adams State women totaled 27, with top-ranked Lincoln (Mo.) checking in with 25.
By conference, the Northeast-10 led the way on both the men's and women's lists with 111 and 92, respectively. The MIAA and GLIAC men followed with 89 and 84. Just behind the NE-10 women were the GLIAC with 90 and the MIAA with 75.
