Women’s Track and Field Third at SAC Championships

HICKORY, N.C. - With opening day of the inaugural Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Men's and Women's Track and Field Championships in the books, the Trojan women are third, just behind Wingate and Queens, at Lenoir-Rhyne's Irwin Belk Track and the Moretz Sports - Athletic Complex.

With the teams wrapping up five events on the first day of competition, AU women's throwers captured three of the top six spots in the hammer throw, with juniors Brooklyn Watt and Savanna Keese finishing one-two, with distances of 40.99 meters and 40.49 meters, respectively. Sophomore D'Yandra Morris brought home sixth with a toss of 38.30 meters.

Junior Jill Baxter (4.42 meters) and freshman Megan Shahoud (4.19 meters) claimed 15th and 16th, respectively in the long jump, with Shahoud claiming second in the high jump with a height of 1.58 meters. Baxter finished in a four-way tie for third with a height of 1.53 meters.

Watt (28.64 meters) and Baxter (28.36 meters) finished seventh and eighth, respectively in the javelin throw, with Keese claiming 20th in a distance of 17.98 meters.

Freshman Grace Gerlock earned fifth in the 10,000 meter run in a time of 40:17.95.

On the men's side, freshman Eric Hoover brought home 20th in the javelin throw with a distance of 32.70 meters.

The final day of competition is tentatively set to get underway Saturday morning with the men's shot put at 10 a.m. and the women's steeplechase at 11 a.m.
