Lees-McRae Beats AU Women

BANNER ELK, N.C. -- Four Lees-McRae scored in double figures to lead the Bobcats to a 64-55 victory over Anderson University in a Conference Carolinas game Monday night at the Williams Gymnasium. With the win, Lees-McRae improves to 5-4 overall and 3-1 in conference action, while Anderson calls to 3-6 overall and 3-2 in the conference. Leading the way for the Bobcats was senior Cortney Furr, who scored 12 points. She was 4-for-8 from the field and 2-for-4 from behind the arc. Furr also knocked down both of her free throw attempts. Following Furr with 11 points apiece were Lauren Casey and Renee Roberson. Ashley Holland had 10 points, six boards, five assists and four steals. Keana Boyd came off the bench for the Lady Trojans to lead all scorers with 14 points. Shanice Wilson and Ashley Abed tailed 11 points each for the Lady Trojans. Peterson grabbed a game high 15 rebounds. Lees-McRae jumped out to an early 11-4 lead with 15:55 to play in the half when Casey knocked down a jumper, but Anderson would battle back with a 12-2 run. Alexa Neal made a field goal to close out the Lady Trojan run and give AU a 16-15 lead. The lead was short lived when Holland made a free throw to tie the game at 16 with 7:27 remaining in the half. The Lady Bobcats extended the lead to eight -- 26-18 -- on a Furr 3-point basket with 2:41 left in the half, but the Lady Trojans closed the gap and trailed by four -- 26-22 -- at the intermission. Neither team shot the ball well in the first half. Lees-McRae shot 28 percent (9-31) from the floor and 30 percent (3-10) from behind the 3-point line, while Anderson shot 30 percent (8-26) from the floor. In the second half, Lees-McRae opened up a 14-point lead -- 37-23 -- with 14:42 remaining in the game. Anderson would cut the lead to four -- 54-50 -- with 2:48 to play. Peterson hit two free throws and Boyd made a free throw, but Renee Roberson stepped up and knocked down a trey and a field goal on the next possession to give the Lady Bobcats a 59-50 lead.
