No. 25 Wingate Rallies Past AU, 84-77

ANDERSON, S.C. -- No. 25 Wingate used a 21-3 run during a four-minute span of the second half to take control of the game and went on to post an 84-77 victory over Anderson University Wednesday night at the Abney Center. Wingate, 6-2 overall, trailed 55-49 with 12:51 remaining before going on the decisive run. Two 3-point goals apiece by Anna Atkinson and Stephanie Whitenack helped fuel the run and take the Bulldogs from one point down to nine points up in a one and a half minute span. A layup by Stafani Shuey with 3:03 remaining gave Wingate its largest lead of 13 points -- 80-67. The key statistic in the game was turnovers. Wingate's relentless pressure forced 33 Anderson turnovers which the Bulldogs turned into half of their points -- 42. The deeper Wingate bench outscored the Anderson bench, 38-14. After trailing the first eight minutes of the game, Wingate took the lead at the 10:33 mark of the first half on a 3-point goal by Brittany West. The Bulldogs led by 10 -- 38-28 -- with 2:32 remaining in the first half before the Lady Trojans went on a 9-0 run led by Keana Boyd to cut the Bulldog halftime lead to 38-37. Boyd scored six of the nine points. Anderson, 2-5 overall, took the lead with 18:24 remaining in the game and held it until a 3-point basket by Whitenack gave the Bulldogs the lead for good at the 11:16 mark. Wingate was led by Whitenack, who came off the bench to score 18 points. Atkinson tallied 16, Shuey scored 13, and West and CC Brooks scored 11 apiece. Boyd led all scorers with 26 points. Boyd made five of Anderson's eight 3-point goals. Shanice Wilson and Alexa Neal added 14 apiece for AU. Led by Kirsten Peterson's career-high 16 rebounds, Anderson won the boards, 46-40. Twenty-one of Wingate's rebounds came off the offensive glass. Peterson also blocked a career-high seven shots. Wingate had 19 assists on 32 baskets. Atkinson handed out eight of the assists. Anderson shot 52 percent in the second half to finish the game at 49 percent. Wingate finished the game at 42 percent. The Bulldogs recorded 20 steals.
