ANDERSON, S.C. – Anderson University men's track and field senior Philip Quillen has been named the Jimmy John's Male Athlete of the Week, while softball's Laken Maxwell and women's track and field sophomore Brianna Quartararo have been named Jimmy John's Co-Female Athletes of the Week.
Quartararo was named the South Atlantic Conference Astroturf Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week for her performance at last weekend's CIU Rams Invitational. The native of Port Jefferson Station, N.Y., broke the school record in the 600 meters by posting a time of 1:38.31. Quartararo also placed second in the 400m race and was part of the winning 4x400m relay team.
Maxwell captured SAC AstroTurf Pitcher of the Week honors after earning two wins over North Greenville last Tuesday. The right-hander tossed a complete game, 8-0, shutout in game one, while surrendering just three hits and fanning seven Crusaders. The native of Bowdon, Ga. entered game two with a tie game and bases loaded in the seventh inning and worked out of the jam. The Trojans went on to score the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning, allowing Maxwell to pick up her second career win.
Overall, Maxwell pitched eight innings, allowed three hits and struck out 10 batters in the sweep.
Quillen won the 5,000 meter race at the CIU Ram's Invite last Friday. He finished 16 seconds in front of his nearest competitor out of 28 runners. The win marked Quillen's second-fastest 5K performance of his career. The Spartanburg native came back later and placed seventh overall in the mile run, while setting a new personal-best time of 4:27.
Each week, one male and one female student-athlete are honored as the Jimmy John's Athlete of the Week for his or her performance in competition, in the classroom, or in the community.
