Women’s Track and Field Finishes Fifth at South Atlantic Conference Indoor Championships, Men Finish Seventh

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Paced by the women's distance medley relay team, the Anderson women's track and field team claimed fifth place, while the men's squad finished seventh at the inaugural South Atlantic Conference Indoor Championships, Monday at the JDL Fast Track.

In addition junior Abigail Bozarth was named the recipient of the SAC's Elite 20 award, which goes to the student-athlete with the top cumulative grade-point average based on a minimum of 48 credit hours who is competing at the final site of each of the league's 20 team championship sports. The Summerville, S.C., native carries a 4.0 GPA and is majoring in kinesiology.

Bozarth claimed eighth place in the mile run with a time of 5:30.57.

The women's distance medley relay team, consisting of freshman Olivia Rish and the junior trio of Madison Seay, Emily Pitts and Bozarth, won the event in a time of 12:54.13. The 4x400 meter relay team, made up of sophomore Jasmine Barmore, Pitts, Bridges and Seay finished second in a time of 4:05.68.

Seay also finished 10th in the 60 meter hurdles in a time of 9.75.

Freshman Olivia Evans finished third in the 5,000 meter run in a time of 17:47.93, with freshman Hannah Beach (19:10.56) placing seventh and senior Hannah Sanford claiming 10th in a time of 19:23.79. Freshman Lydia Gambrell took 12th place after crossing the finish line in a time of 19:48.11.

Evans also finished third in the 3,000 meter run in a time of 10:20.69, with freshman Hannah Beach (11:05.77) taking ninth place and junior Maddie Buddenberg (11:12.93) finishing in 11th place. Rish was 21st in a time of 11:45.59 and Emily Olson finished 26th in a time of 12:41.20.

Junior JoLyn Copeland finished fifth in the weight throw with a distance of 14.80 meters and claimed 15th in the women's shot put with a toss of 9.71 meters. Sophomore Jasmine Barmore finished ninth in the 400 meter run in a time of 1:02.27, with freshman Emilee Edwards claiming 21st in a time of 1:05.43. Sophomore Morgan Bridges finished third in the 800 meter run in a time of 2:23.13, while junior Emily Pitts (2:25.66) claimed sixth place.

On the men's side, senior Mason Hazel finished second in the 5,000 meter run in a time of 15:14.97, with freshman Ben Clark just behind in third with a time of 15:16.41. Freshmen Joey Teachout (15:47.92) and Weston Hutto (16:10.20) finished 10th and 13th, respectively.

Hazel claimed third place in the men's 3,000 meter run with a time of 8:37.88, with Clark finishing 10th in a time of 8:58.77. Senior John Drummond (9:30.19) crossed the finish line in 24th place. The men's distance medley squad, made up of freshmen Matthew Burgess, Robert Jones, Cameron Owens-Hunter and Phillip Quillen claimed sixth place in a time of 10:58.98.

The 4x400 meter relay team, made up of sophomore Jordan Anderson, senior Rashod Monts, freshman Riley Dixon and Jones, claimed eighth place in a time of 3:35.53. Quillen (4:35.33) finished eighth in the mile run, while Dixon claimed 13th in a time of 4:46.89. Freshman David Rolon was 22nd in a time of 5:01.03, while classmate Hayden Tuten (5:12.67) finished 23rd.

Sophomore Chandler Johnson finished 24th in the shot put with a distance of 11.21 meters, with freshman Connor Wheatley placing 28th with a toss of 10.92 meters. Wheatley claimed 16th place in the weight throw with a distance of 11.77 meters and Johnson (10.23 meters) placed 21st. Sophomore Jordan Anderson brought home 18th place in the 400 meter run in a time of 53.36 and freshman Austin Elgin finished 23rd in the men's 200 meter dash in a time of 23.53.

Anderson is scheduled to return to Winston-Salem on Sunday to wrap up its indoor schedule at the JDL Last Chance Meet.
