WINGATE, N.C. - With four players reaching double figures, the Anderson men's basketball team wrapped up its 2014 slate with a 76-73 win past Wingate in South Atlantic Conference action Saturday afternoon at Cuddy Arena.
Anderson (6-5, 2-3 SAC), which won its fourth straight and claimed its fifth win in the last six outings, built a nine-point lead with just more than a minute left in the game and senior guard Alani Adekambi's two free throws with 13 seconds remaining in the game provided the Trojans with their final points of the afternoon.
Wingate slipped to 7-3 overall and 4-1 in the conference, while suffering its second straight setback and lost at home for the first time this season.
Adekambi finished with a game-high 17 points, while senior Chris
Ross recorded 16 points and pulled down a game-high six rebounds.
Senior guard Myson Jones tossed in 15 points and handed out a
team-best four assists. Senior guard Nick Jackson added 13 points
in the winning effort.
Junior Xavier Griffin led the Bulldogs with 15 points and dished
out a game-high six assists, while sophomore forward Isiah Cureton
posted 14 points.
The score was tied six times on the afternoon and featured 16
lead changes, with the nine-point Trojan advantage marking the
largest lead by either team on the afternoon. AU won the battle of
the boards, 29-23, and the Trojans' 61.4 percent shooting on the
afternoon marked their best accuracy of the season. After draining
just two 3-pointers in the opening 20 minutes, the Trojans
connected on 6-of-8 treys in the second half en route to 61.5
percent accuracy from long range.
The Bulldogs edged out to their largest lead of the contest, at
16-11, when Josh Dominguez hit one-of-two from the free throw line
with 10:52 left in the first half, but AU answered quickly and
countered to take a brief two-point, 20-18, advantage on freshman
Maurice Howard's lone 3-pointer of the contest three minutes
later.
With the score knotted at 26 apiece, the Trojans reeled off seven unanswered points, with four players contributing points during the surge. But the Bulldogs countered with an unusual four-point play from Bryan Rouse, and a 3-pointer from Terrill Hilliard just before the horn sent the teams to halftime with the score even at 33-33.
Wingate held the advantage for the opening five minutes of the second stanza, but did not lead by more than three and the lead changed hands five times over a two-minute span, with Howard's offensive rebound and layup at the 12:18 mark giving the Trojans a lead they would not surrender.
With AU holding the nine-point lead, the Bulldogs scored six unanswered points to close within three, but Adekambi halted the run with the pair of free throws to boost the Trojan lead to 76-71 with 13 seconds on the clock. Keith Griffin's layup with five seconds left pulled Wingate back within one possession and the Trojans were unable to convert from the free throw line in the final moments, but Wingate was unable to capitalize before time expired.
The Trojans wrapped up the month of December with a 5-1 record
and now take a two-week break from the hardwood for the Christmas
and New Year's holidays before playing host to Catawba in a South
Atlantic Conference matchup on Saturday, Jan. 3 at the Abney
Athletic Center. Tip-off versus the Indians is set for 4 p.m.
