NEWBERRY, S.C. - Despite holding Newberry to more than 21 points less than its season average, Anderson saw the Wolves use a second-half outburst to outpace the Trojans, 74-59, in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action Saturday afternoon at Eleazer Arena.

Anderson slipped to 2-5 overall and 1-3 in the conference, while Newberry (8-0, 4-0 SAC), which is ranked 22nd nationally in the latest weekly D2SIDA National Poll, snapped a seven-game skid at the hands of the Trojans.

Senior center Chris Ross led Anderson with a season-high 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field, while pulling down a game-high 10 rebounds for the Trojans' first double-double of the season. Sophomore Lex Davis added nine points in 13 minutes off the bench, while senior guard Myson Jones scored eight points.

Freshman James Stepp led three Wolves in double figures with 15 points, while senior forward Dondray Walker added 14 points and sophomore guard Gerald Evans tossed in 13 points.

Anderson shot just 35.4 percent from the field, but the Trojans' defensive effort held the Wolves to less than 32 percent accuracy from the field. However, Newberry out-rebounded Anderson, 48-38, and turned a season-high 23 Trojan turnovers into 22 points.

Both teams got off to a slow start on the offensive end, with Newberry holding an 11-7 edge at the 14:41 mark of the opening half. Neither team scored for the next three minutes, with Jones snapping the drought with his second 3-pointer of the night from the left side to trim the deficit to one.

Following a short jumper from Newberry's James Ashby, AU's Alani Adekambi countered with a pair of free throws to again cut the Newberry advantage to just one, but it was as close as the Trojans would get the rest of the way, as the Wolves led wire-to-wire on their home hardwood.

After the Wolves built a 20-12 lead with just less than nine minutes left in the opening frame, Ross answered with a close basket and Davis dropped in four straight points for AU, as the Trojans closed within one possession. However, the Wolves closed the half with an 8-2 run to take a 28-20 lead at intermission.

The two teams traded seven-point runs early in the second half, with the Trojans striking first. AU's Nick Jackson opened the scoring with his first trey of the night, with Ross adding four points to again pull the Trojans within one, at 28-27, with 18:24 left in the game.

But the Wolves countered with a pair of seven-point runs in quick succession and claimed their first double-digit advantage with 12:12 on the clock when Walker rattled home the second of two free throws. Freshman Kendall Henry's layup less than two minutes later pulled Anderson within 44-38. But the Wolves answered with a 14-2 surge to break the contest open with more than eight minutes on the clock.

The Trojans open their longest homestand of the season by welcoming nonconference foe Limestone to the Abney Center on Wednesday. Tip-off versus the Saints is slated for 7 p.m.
