Men's Basketball Squeaks out Win over Georgia College

Dec. 13, 2014

ANDERSON, S.C. - For the second time in four days, Anderson's Chris Ross dropped in the winning basket in the final seconds to help propel the Trojans to an exciting, 58-57, come-from-behind win past Georgia College in nonconference men's basketball action at the Abney Athletic Center.

"I am very happy for the team," said Anderson head coach Jason Taylor. "They didn't get discouraged and found a way to win against a very good team and a well-coached team."

Anderson (4-5) claimed its second straight win and has won three of its last four outings, while snapping the Bobcats' four-game win streak. Georgia College slipped to 6-3 on the season, with all three of its losses coming by one point.

Tony Dargan came off the bench to score a career-high 13 points for the Trojans, while tallying four rebounds and a pair of steals. Guard Nick Jackson added 12 points, while Ross, Alani Adekambi and Myson Jones each posted eight points in the win. Adekambi shared game-high rebounding honors by pulling down eight caroms, with Ross collecting six boards. DJ McGowan and Maurice Howard each dished out three assists.

Junior guard Ryan Blumenthal scored 12 points for the Bobcats, with Terrell Harris adding 10 points and eight rebounds.

Ross' second game-winner in as many games followed a flurry of activity around the Trojans' basket, with Anderson rallying from a seven-point deficit with less than two minutes left in the game.

Blumenthal's fourth 3-pointer of the second half gave Georgia College a 57-50 advantage with 1:49 on the clock, but it proved to be the last score for the Bobcats on the night, as the Trojans closed the contest with eight consecutive points.

Jones answered Blumenthal's trey with back-to-back 3-pointers of his own, first off an assist from McGowan, then Jackson found the Aiken, S.C. native open for his second trey of the contest less than 30 seconds later with just more than a minute left in the game.

Leading, 57-56, Georgia College patiently worked the ball around on the offensive end with Larrentis Thomas breaking for the basket as the clock wound down, but his shot was rejected in traffic, with Jones grabbing the rebound. Jackson then misfired on a 3-point attempt, with Adekambi collecting the rebound, but he was unable to drop in the crowded putback. Ross then gathered in the miss, recovered his balance and rolled in the final basket with less than six seconds on the clock.

Georgia College called successive timeouts, then following a foul by McGowan, the Bobcats inbounded the ball, with Dwight Anderson scooping up a loose ball and getting off an off-balance 17-footer at the buzzer that bounced off the rim.

The opening half was tied just once, but the lead changed hands five times in the opening 20 minutes, with neither team able to build more than a four-point lead through the first 18-plus minutes. GC's Rio McMillian dropped in a layup with 1:24 left in the first frame that gave the Bobcats a 27-21 edge at the half.

Georgia College scored the first four points of the second half to build a double-digit lead, at 31-21, marking the largest lead by either team throughout the game. AU quickly slashed the deficit to 31-28 with less than 15 minutes left in the game and stayed within two possessions, but was unable to wrest the lead away from Georgia College until Ross scored in the final moments.
