Ratliff's Single Sends AC To Saturday

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Jason Ratliff singled to bring home Jessie Whiteside in the bottom of the eighth inning and give Anderson College a 7-6 victory over Barton College Friday afternoon and eliminate the Bulldogs from the 2004 CVAC Tournament at Duncan Park. Anderson (20-34) advances to play the loser of the St. Andrews-Pfeiffer Friday night game at 1 p.m. Saturday at Duncan Park. The loss ends Barton's season at 27-26. Anderson gave away a 6-0 lead in the eighth then bounced back with a single run in the eighth to salvage the victory. With one out and runners on second and third, Jared Taylor hit a grounder to shortstop Eric McInerny, who threw to the plate to cut down Kyle Lewis. But Ratliff followed Taylor with a single through the right side to score Whiteside with the winning run. Ratliff was 3-for-4 with two RBI to lead the Anderson offense. Anderson outhit the Bulldogs, 14-12. Adam Dymond walked the lead off batter in the Barton ninth but survived to pick up his seventh save of the season. Trailing 6-0, Barton dropped six runs on Anderson in the top of the eighth to tie the game. A three-run homer by Dennis Blackmon broke up Anderson starter Brett Youngblood's shutout and cut the Anderson lead to 6-3. After a single by Michael Kopp, Tyler Petty hit a two-run homer to make it 6-5 in favor of Anderson. An RBI single by Kevin Brousseau tied the game at 6. The Trojans increased their lead to 6-0 in the sixth on an RBI single by Caleb Owen and a run-scoring single by Taylor. Five consecutive hits to open the bottom of the fourth helped give Anderson a 4-0 lead. The Trojans scored on a lead-off solo homer to left by Ratliff, an RBI double by F.A. Vildosola, a run-scoring single by Jonathan Pitts, and sacrifice fly by Jessie Whiteside. In Anderson's first game of the day, Pfeiffer University pitcher Chris Nall pitched a complete game and Jeff Robbins drove in five runs to lead the top-seeded Falcons to an 11-2 victory over eighth-seeded Anderson at Duncan Park. Nall scattered eight hits, struck out three, walked none, and recorded 13 ground outs. The Falcons (38-10) turned three double plays behind Nall. Robbins had three of Pfeiffer's 11 hits and scored two runs. A three-run homer by Robbins and a sacrifice fly by Mark Campbell in the seventh increased the Pfeiffer lead to 10-2. Pfeiffer, scoreless through four innings, took a 6-2 lead in the fifth. The Falcons sent 10 batters to play and scored six runs on a two-run single by Brian York, a pair of RBI singles by Robbins and Robert Scott, and a two-run double by Jamie Tucker. Anderson scored two runs in the first on an infield single by Owen and a two-run homer by Taylor.
