Anderson, Erskine Split Doubleheader

ANDERSON, S.C. - Erskine College pounded out 22 hits in the second game on its way to a 20-10 victory and a split of a CVAC doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Anderson Memorial Stadium. In the first game, Anderson freshman pitcher Desmond Robson pitched a four-hit shutout to lead the Trojans to a 1-0 victory. After being held scoreless in the first game and in the first two innings of the second game, Erskine came to life and scored 20 runs in the final seven innings of the afternoon. Anthony Passalacqua and Casey Smith led the Flying Fleet offense with three hits and four RBI apiece. Robbie Knapp also had three hits and drove in three runs, two with a home run in the top of the seventh. Erskine's 20 runs and 22 hits set new season highs by an Anderson opponent. Erskine scored two runs in the third, two in the fourth, and three in the fifth to take a 7-3 lead. But Anderson bounced back with four runs in the fifth to tie the game at 7. A two-out, three-run triple by Kyle Lewis was the big hit in the Anderson fifth. But the Fleet took the lead for good with a five-run sixth that was highlighted by a two-run double by Smith and Knapp's two-run shot. Trailing 12-9, the Trojans loaded the bases in the eighth with two outs, but Erskine reliever Brandon Auten got F.A. Vildosola to line out to end the inning. Auten pitched 3 1/3 innings and allowed just two hits and one run to pick up a save. After shutting down that Anderson rally, the Fleet put the game away with eight runs in the top of the ninth. Passalacqua had a two-run double and Smith had a two-run single in the inning. In the seven-inning first game, Robeson, a native of Easley, allowed just four hits, all singles, and struck out four to pick up his third victory of the season. Erskine had just two runs reach second base. AC got the only run it needed against Erskine's Chad Hinson, who struck out five and walked three in six innings, in the fifth. Caleb Owen led off with a walk, moved to third on a single by Jared Taylor and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jason Ratliff. Anderson is now 13-26 overall and 6-11 in the CVAC, while Erskine stands at 26-17, 8-10. Box Score: Anderson 1, Erskine 0 Box Score: Erskine 20, Anderson 10 Season Statistics
