Cougars Claw Anderson, 9-1

ANDERSON, S.C. - Zach Watson blanked Anderson College on two hits in seven innings and Larry Pittmon was 4-for-5 and drove in three runs to lead Columbus State to a 9-1 victory over Anderson College in a non-conference game Friday night at Anderson Memorial Stadium. Watson faced one batter over the minimum in seven innings of work. He struck out four and walked none. The Cougars, 16-14 overall, collected 16 hits against five Anderson pitchers, and the Trojans helped Columbus State by making six errors, four in the first three innings. In addition to Pittmon, four Cougars - Kurt McKee, Garrett Groce, Chris Lindlief, and Clif Harrison had two hits apiece. One of Harrison's hits was a two-run triple. Trailing 9-0, the Trojans, 10-22, broke up the shut out in the eighth against Cougar reliever Joel Fincher. Donavon Schmidt walked, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a two-out single by Jonathan Pitts. Anderson managed just four hits in the game, all singles, and Pitts had two of the Trojans' hits. Singles by Lindlief and Trent Bianco and Harrison's triple put the Cougars ahead 6-0 in the fifth and knocked out Anderson starter Brian Devereaux, 0-2. Harrison scored on a sacrifice fly by McKee to make it 7-0 in favor of the Cougars. Groce followed McKee with a two-out single, stole second and scored the Cougars' eighth run on a single by Pittmon. With two outs in the fourth, Pittmon singled, reach second on an error by center fielder Jared Taylor and scored on a double by Billy Howard. The fourth Anderson error of the game helped increase the Columbus State lead to 3-0 in the third. A throwing error by Devereaux put runners at second and third with two outs, and Lindlief delivered a single to center to score Howard, who had reached on a fielder's choice. Columbus State received a gift run in the second. With two outs, Bianco reached on a throwing error by shortstop Kyle Lewis, moved to third on a throwing error by catcher Jesse Whiteside, and scored on a throwing error by Pitts. The Cougars jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first on a double by Groce and a single by Pittmon. This weekend, Anderson will play host to CVAC leader Pfeiffer for a three-game series, while Columbus State will visit Peach Belt foe USC Spartanburg for a three-game set.
