ANDERSON, S.C. - In a battle for the top spot in the South Atlantic Conference standings, the 15th-ranked Anderson women's team used a fourth-quarter rally to outlast Newberry, 67-64, Saturday afternoon at the Abney Athletic Center.

Anderson overcame early foul trouble and improved to 13-3 overall and 11-2 in the conference by snapping a two-game skid, while Newberry (11-9, 10-4 SAC) saw its win streak halted at two.

Trojan senior forward Jennifer Monroe posted her seventh double-double of the season with 19 points and a game-high 18 rebounds, while senior guard Madison Floyd added 14 points. Junior forward Alexis Dillard tallied eight points and six rebounds, with Junior guard Heather Jankowy handing out a game-best six assists.

Newberry's Samantha Creed led all scorers with 21 points, with Meg Essex adding 13 points and six boards. Nicola Handreck notched 11 points for the Wolves.

Anderson roared out of the gate by scoring the first 12 points of the game, while holding the Wolves scoreless for the opening 4:10 of the contest. Creed got the visitors on the scoreboard by connecting on 1-of-2 from the line, while the Black and Gold took their largest lead of the contest, 24-10, just 13 seconds into the second quarter.

But after holding the Wolves to 15.4 percent shooting (2-of-13) in the opening frame, Newberry chipped away with a 15-6 surge to climb back into the contest. AU sophomore guard Jasmine Raynor slowed the Wolves' charge with five straight points and the Trojans took a 37-31 advantage into intermission.

The Wolves opened the third quarter with a 9-3 scoring outburst to knot the score for the first time of the afternoon, at 40-40, with 6:24 left in the third quarter. After the Trojans reclaimed a 48-43 lead behind five points from Monroe, Newberry responded by scoring nine unanswered points to take their first advantage of the game, while leading 52-50 at the end of the third quarter.

Monroe sparked AU's deciding rally by connecting on 1-of-2 from the line, while guard Nakia Young capped the surge with four straight points to give the Trojans a 58-52 lead with 7:44 on the clock.

With Anderson still holding an eight-point lead at the 4:37 mark, the Wolves went on a 10-3 run that was capped by Creed's long 3-pointer from the left wing that brought Newberry within 65-64 with 32.4 seconds remaining. But it was the final basket by the scarlet and gray, as Floyd dropped in a pair of free throws with 16.7 seconds left to set the final margin.

Anderson will play three of its next four contests on the road, with the Trojans slated to visit Queens University of Charlotte on Monday. Tip-off in the Queen City is scheduled for 6 p.m
