Women’s Basketball Runs Past Clemson, 79-55, in Preseason Exhibition

ANDERSON, S.C. - Led by senior Madison Floyd's game-high 25 points, No. 22 Anderson University women's basketball stunned Division I Clemson with a 79-55 victory in a preseason exhibition Sunday afternoon at the Abney Athletic Center.

With the victory, the Trojans claim their first exhibition victory over a Division I opponent since knocking off the Tigers at the beginning of the 2012-13 season. In AU's last three games, the Black and Gold have knocked off the No. 3 team in the nation, played in the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 and defeated a Division I opponent.

Floyd connected on six 3-pointers for the afternoon on 9-for-15 from the field, which would mark her career-high for regular-season games. Classmate Jennifer Monroe followed the guard with 17 points on 8-of-12 from the field, including a team-high seven rebounds. Offensively, Anderson out-scored Clemson in three of the four quarters and drew even with the Tigers in the second period, 11-11.

The Trojans closed the contest shooting 46.6 percent (27-for-58) from the field, headlined by a 10-for-22 performance (45.5 percent) from behind the 3-point line. Defensively, AU held the Tigers to 33.3 percent (20-for-60) from the floor and out-rebounded CU 48-41 for the day.

"I'm really proud of our effort this afternoon," Anderson head coach Jimmy Garrity said. "This was a great team win and we showed a lot of grit and toughness down the stretch. We did a great job running our offense and had a lot of really good looks at the basket. We took advantage of those opportunities and made a lot of plays."

After a back-and-forth first half that saw the Black and Gold take a 34-31 lead into the halftime break, Anderson came alive in the second half, out-scoring the visitors 45-24, including a 23-7 mark in the fourth quarter. Within the decisive second half, the Trojans were 16-for-30 (53.3 percent) from the floor with a 6-for-12 (50 percent) mark from behind the arc. Monroe paced the Black and Gold with 15 second-half points.

"I thought our defensive effort was outstanding, especially in the fourth quarter," Garrity said. "We did a great job on the defensive boards and to out-rebound them and limit their second-chance points was really big."

With the score reaching 36-35 with eight minutes remaining in the third quarter, Anderson rattled off eight straight points which led to an eventual 18-4 run over the next six minutes. Floyd headlined the run with a trio of 3-pointers to give AU its first double-figure lead of the contest.

In addition to the victory, the Abney Center saw a new attendance record with an over-capacity crowd of 1,024, marking the first over-capacity crowd in the history of the venue.

"I want to thank the fans, especially the students that were at the game," Garrity concluded. "There atmosphere was awesome."

The Trojans continue their preseason schedule next Sunday when they hit the road for the first time this season and square off with Western Carolina. Tip-off from Cullowhee is scheduled for 2 p.m.
