Anderson Women Second After First Round

ANDERSON, S.C. -- USC Upstate placed three players in the top four to take the first-round lead in the 2006 Anderson University Invitational at the Brookstone Meadows Golf Club Monday afternoon. Individual leader Richelle Wedzik of USC Upstate shot a 2-over 74 in the first round on the par-72, 6,000-yard Brookstone layout. Upstate's Richia Wedzik is in second place with a 75, and Upstate's Julie Miller is in fourth place with a 77. Richelle Wedzik's first-round score was one shot off the first-round record for the event. Kristen Kyle of Catawba shot a 73 in the first round of the 2003 Invitational. Upstate finished the first round with a team total of 307, 15 shots ahead of second-place Anderson (322), and 29 shots ahead of third-place Tusculum (336). Wingate is fourth at 339, Mount Olive is fifth at 344, and Queens University of Charlotte is sixth at 348. Lincoln Memorial (355), Limestone (355), and Presbyterian (409) round out the field. Anderson had a steady first round with two 80s and two 81s. Freshman Sophie Dembroski and senior Jenny Fretwell both posted 80, while freshman Elizabeth Belanger and sophomore Erin May both shot 81. The average score for the field in the first round was 88.53. The most birdies were recorded on the 460-yard par-5 14th hole -- six. The narrow 450-yard par-5 12th hole gave the field the most trouble -- 16 bogeys, 10 double bogeys, and 10 others. The stroke average on No. 12 was 6.43.
