Trojans Enjoy Largest Point Total of Season In Win Over UVA Wise; 91-72

ANDERSON, S.C. – Following two straight road setbacks, Anderson University women's basketball (11-9, 5-5 SAC) used the energy of its home fans to pour in a season high point total (91), on Saturday afternoon at the Abney Athletic Center.

"It was great to see our offense kick in today," said head coach Jonathon Barbaree.

"Defensively, I thought we got too comfortable, but hitting shots helps hide those mistakes," explained Barbaree. "I definitely want to point out how proud I am of Xan today, coming in and shooting lights out when we needed that push."

"Also, a solid job by everyone on the boards," added Barbaree.

UVA Wise shot over 60% in the opening quarter to claim the first quarter of play, 21-18 with Anderson flipping the script in the second period of play. The Trojans shot 60% from the field, including the three-point line to claim an 11-point halftime lead.

The Cavaliers were able to pull within four with 7:10 remaining in the third, however senior Jalyn Spurlin made back-to-back jumpers to push the Trojan lead back to eight. Freshman Ashlyn Sheridan hit a three-point shot with under a minute to go in the quarter to give AU a 12-point lead heading into the final 10 minutes of action.

The Black and Gold continued with the hot hand in the fourth quarter. Senior Xan Rowland scored eight points in the quarter after draining two three-pointers and a layup to add to her three-point basket earlier in the second half. For the game, Rowland was a perfect 4-fo-4 from the field, including 3-of-3 from behind the arc to help the Trojans score the most total points this season with 91.

Anderson outscored UVA Wise, 29-22, in the final period to extend it final margin of victory to 19 points.

Sophomore Diamond McDowell scored a game-high 18 points and pulled down 13 rebounds to record her seventh double-double of the season. Senior Brittney Stafford netted 17 points, while Spurlin finished the game with 14 on 5-of-11 shooting. Rowland chipped in 11 points and was credited with three assists and one steal in 11 minutes of play.

The Cavaliers placed three players in double-digit scoring with Nia Vanzant scoring a team-high 14 points. Vanzant also dished out a game-high seven assists. Katlin Burger and Caitlyn Ross both contribute 13 points apiece.

Anderson remains home to host SAC opponent Newberry on Wednesday. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 pm.
