Stingy Fourth Quarter Defense Propels Trojans To Victory; 83-59

CENTRAL, S.C. – Carrying just a five-point lead into the fourth quarter of play, Anderson University (3-3) women's basketball turned up the defensive intensity to help propel the Trojans to a 24-point win, 83-59, over nonconference opponent Southern Wesleyan (0-6) on Saturday afternoon at Historic Tysinger Gymnasium.

"It was nice to see us execute on offense today, said head coach Jonathon Barbaree. "I thought we hustled for a lot of loose ball and made plays."
"Brit was huge for us in the third and start of the fourth quarter snatching rebounds and getting put backs," emphasized Barbaree.  "That effort really helped us start to create separation."
"We'll sleep, go to church, ice bath, and study hall tomorrow, then play another road game on Monday," added Barbaree.

With the Warriors shooting nearly 48 percent from the field for the first three quarters of action, the Trojans held Southern Wesleyan to just 15.4 percent and seven total points in the final stanza. Anderson exploded for 26 total points in the fourth period to pull away from the Warriors, eventually securing a 24-point road victory.

The Black and Gold placed three players in double-figure scoring with senior Jalyn Spurlin scoring a team-high 17 points. Spurlin also grabbed two rebounds and was credited with three steals on the afternoon. Seniors Britney Bailey and Brittney Stafford each chipped in 10 points apiece with Bailey ripping down 11 rebounds to record her first double-double of the season. Junior Maggie Campbell netted nine points, draining 3-of-5 three-points basketball. Graduate student Caria Reynolds had a productive eight minutes of actions after scoring five points and pulling down five rebounds.

Southern Wesleyan also placed three players in double digit scoring with Brittney Mack dropping in a game-high 18 points. Allie Newberry and Shelby Glance chipped in 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Anderson remains on the road, for its third of five roads games in a row, to play nonconference opponent Belmont Abbey on Monday. Tip-off is slated for 5 pm.
