Trojans Pick Up Road Win At Coker; 63-56

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Paced by senior Jalyn Spurlin's game-high 18 points, Anderson University (8-6, 2-2 SAC) survive its South Atlantic Conference road contest at Coker (4-9, 2-2 SAC), 63-56, on Saturday afternoon at the DeLoach Center.

"Any road win is a great win," said head coach Jonathon Barbaree. "I thought we battled hard and made some big plays down the stretch including hitting our free throws. We gave up a few too many boards for our liking but we will work on that when we get back."

"We play in a great conference and we have to be ready every game!," emphasized Barbaree.

After jumping out to a 22-15 first quarter lead, Anderson went cold from the floor allowing Coker to use an 11-2 run to erase a 10-point lead. AU did not score its first basket of the second quarter until freshman Ashlyn Sheridan's jumpshot at the 4:19 mark to give the Black and Gold a three-point lead, 24-21. Coker briefly took its first lead of the game with 40 seconds to play, but back-to-back jump shots by sophomore Martyna Radzicka gave Anderson a, 30-27, lead heading into the half.

Anderson was able to push its lead back to 10 points early in the third period, however the Cobras would not go away. Coker finished the quarter outscoring the Trojans, 11-7, to set the game score at, 47-41, with the fourth quarter remaining.

Coker cut the lead to one-point with 1:14 left, before Spurlins' traditional three-point play put the Trojans back up by four points with just under a minute to play. Anderson was able to hit 5-of-6 free throws the remaining 58 seconds to close out its conference road win.

Anderson placed three players in double-digit scoring with Spurlin scoring a game-high 18 points. Sophomore Diamond McDowell netted 15 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to record her fifth double-double of the season. Sheridan also dropped in 15 points, going 9-of-12 from the charity stripe. The freshman from Knoxville, Tenn., also was credited with a career-high four blocked shots. Seniors Britney Bailey and Brittney Stafford collected nine and eight rebounds, respectively.

The Cobras also placed three players in double-digit scoring with reserves Hope Richardson and Dominique Rodriguez each netting 12 points apiece, while Mya Wasswa scored 10 points on the afternoon.

Anderson will remain on the road to face South Atlantic Conference foe Wingate on Wednesday. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 pm.
