GREENEVILLE, Tenn. - Sophomore Abby Child's walk-off two-RBI double scored Kelly McInnes and Jessica Neidigh with the tying and winning runs, as the Anderson University softball team opened the 2012 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Softball Tournament by rallying for a 3-2 win past Brevard Thursday afternoon at Tusculum's Red Edmonds Field.

Anderson (36-11), seeded third in the double-elimination tourney, won its fourth straight game and advances to meet the winner of the No. 2 seeded Catawba/No. 7 seed Wingate contest.

Brevard (23-23), which was seeded sixth, had won four of their last five regular-season games, drops into the elimination bracket and will face the loser between Catawba and Wingate on Friday at 1 p.m. at the Chuckey-Doak High School field.

The Tornados threatened by getting two runners on base with two outs in the top of the first, when Chelsi Mallory doubled to left and Kayla Clemens followed with a walk, but Duncan ended the threat by inducing sophomore Alyssa Miller to fly out to Charlotte Sieber in center field.

The Trojans countered with a threat of their own in the bottom of the frame, as Neidigh, the SAC Freshman of the Year, led off with an opposite-field single down the left-field line. She stole second and after Child drew a walk on four straight pitches, both runners moved into scoring position with one out. But Brevard's Clemons settled down in the circle to retire the next two Trojans on strikes.

Brevard loaded the bases with two out in the third inning but Duncan again thwarted the Tornados, as Miller flied out to left for the third out.

The Tornados again had two runners in scoring position with one out in the fourth but were unable to push runners across the plate.

Duncan, who escaped the two-out jams in the first, third and fourth innings by stranding seven Tornado base runners through the first four frames, was unable to get out of the fifth inning unscathed, as BC sophomore Emily Boykin's two-run single with two out and the bases loaded plated a pair of runs, as the Tornados snapped the scoreless tie.

Anderson answered with a solo run in the sixth, trimming the deficit to 2-1, when Child scored from third on an errant throw from center field. The SAC Player of the Year led off the inning with a walk and sophomore Danielle Swygert followed with a double off the fence in left center. With one out, Duncan flied out to center and the throw was off the mark, allowing Child to cross the plate. Sophomore Charlotte Sieber, who pinch-hit for Stephanie Hanvey, was hit by a pitch to put runners at the corners with two outs, but the Trojans were unable to capitalize.

With the Trojans still trailing 2-1 heading into their last at-bat, pinch-hitter Rachel Rhodes led off the final inning with a single through the left side. Coach Tommy Hewitt then put McInnes at first as a pinch runner and Neidigh, who was 2-for-3 at the plate through the first six innings, also singled through left side, moving the tying run into scoring position. Two batters later, Child ripped a 1-2 pitch to the gap in left field to score the tying and winning runs.

Neidigh finished the afternoon 3-for-4, including a triple, with a run scored, while Child was 1-for-2 with a pair of walks and recorded the two RBI.

Duncan (21-8) picked up the victory as she tossed her 22nd complete game, allowing seven hits, two unearned runs and five walks. Clemens falls to 14-15 on the season as she went the distance, allowing seven hits, three runs, two earned, three walks and four strikeouts.

The Trojans next contest - versus either Catawba or Wingate - is slated for 1 p.m. Friday at Red Edmonds Field.
