Sloan; Shaffer Named Regional Track and Field Athletes of the Year

NEW ORLEANS - Anderson University standouts Lauren Sloan and Matt Shaffer have earned Southeast Region Athlete of the Year honors in their respective outdoor track and field events, as announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

A senior from Reynoldsburg, Ohio, Sloan finished the season as the No. 1-ranked hammer thrower and No.2-ranked shot putter in the region. She also finished the season ranked sixth in the discus. She was also named Southeast Region Indoor Field Athlete of the Year following the indoor season. The honor marked the fourth consecutive year that an Anderson thrower has been named region field athlete of the year.

Shaffer, a junior from Grove City, Ohio, is the top-ranked 800-meter runner in the Southeast Region and ranks third nationally in the event with a season-best time of 1:50.36, which was set in early April at the Duke Invitational. He will be competing Friday in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Pueblo, Colo.
