Track and Field Teams Notch Strong Outings at Coastal Carolina

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Anderson University track and field teams combined to earn nine top-10 finishes Friday and Saturday at the Coastal Carolina University Invitational at Doug Shaw Stadium.

Junior Matt Shaffer (1:54.13) won the 800 meter run by less than a second, while fellow junior Alex Pena finished ninth in the 3000 meter steeplechase in as time of 10:03.24. Junior Josh Butler crossed the line in 12th in the 100 meter dash in a time of 11.10, while sophomore Matt Imes posted an 11th-place finish in the 10,000 meter run in 35:13.86.

The Trojan combination of Shaffer, Ryne Welch, Drew Mahaffey and Deniz Hay garnered fifth in the 4x800 relay in a time of 8:01.05. Freshman Jonathan Chapman finished fifth in the triple jump with a distance of 13.00 meters, while junior Will Byars brought home 15th in the discus throw at 40.85 meters. Junior Zach Hart earned fourth in the javelin throw with toss of 55.05 meters

In women's competition, senior Whitney Bishoff crossed the line in second in a time of 10:08.08, less than three seconds out of first. In the women's 5000 meter run, sophomore Hannah Robles notched 15th in a time of 19:22.08. Freshman Jill Baxter earned a 12th-place finish in the 400 meter hurdles in a time of 1:09.21, and placed third in the high jump with a height of 1.55 meters.

Freshman Brooklyn Watkins placed fifth in the pole vault with height of 2.90 meters and the women's 4x800 meter relay saw the Trojans garner fourth in a time of 9:45.96, with Bishoff, Sydney Hazel, Rachel Westberry and Madison Guest competing.

Anderson will get back in action in two weeks at the Emory Invitational in Atlanta.
