Track and Field Opens Strong on Day One of Clemson Invitational

CLEMSON, S.C. - The Anderson University track and field teams recorded 13 top-15 performances, including seven outings in the top ten on the first day of competition at the Clemson Invitational Friday afternoon on the at the Tigers' Indoor Track and Field Complex.

For the Trojan women in the track events, senior Sarah Solesbee recorded an 18th-place finish in the preliminaries of the 60 meter dash, while freshman Sydney Hazel (2:32.73) posted a 13th-place finish in the 800 meter run, with sophomore Rachel Westberry (2:35.74) and junior Kathryn Purinton (2:37.77) recording 15th and 18th place, respectively.

The Anderson women throwers also posted a strong outing, with senior Lauren Sloan earning fourth place in the shot put, with a distance of 12.34 meters. A pair of freshmen, Brooklyn Watt and Savanna Keese, finished 10th and 11th, with tosses of 10.26 meters and 9.72 meters, respectively.

Another newcomer, Jill Baxter, notched third in the high jump with a height of 1.55 meters.

On the men's side, junior Josh Butler earned eighth place in the 60 meter dash, crossing the line in a time of 7.11, with teammate Jonathan Chapman taking 15th in a time of 7.45.

The men's 800 meter run saw junior Matt Shaffer claim third in a time of 1:56.45, while teammates Drew Mahaffey (2:04.90) and junior Ryne Welch (2:08.51) cross the line in 17th and 23rd.

The men's throwers also notched stellar performances, as junior Will Byars took fourth with a toss of 13.51 meters and sophomore Brant Bullister earning seventh at 10.83 meters. Freshman Nathan Plank posted a ninth-place finish, at 10.42 meters.

Freshman Jonathan Chapman brought home ninth place with a distance of 6.19 meters in the long jump.

The Trojans are back in action on Saturday, starting with field events at noon, followed by track action at 1 p.m.

RESULTS
