ANDERSON, S.C. - Headlined by senior Paul Michael Calhoun's perfect
day, Anderson University men's tennis held off South Atlantic
Conference foe Carson-Newman with a 6-3 victory Friday afternoon at
the AU Tennis Complex.
The victory gives the Trojans their ninth win of the season,
moving to 9-4 and 6-1 in league play. The Eagles drop to 5-7
overall and 2-4 in conference action.
Anderson jumped out to a hot start in the doubles portion, as
the tandem of Aljaz Cajzek and Mateo Rivas defeated Stefano Daza
and Juan Sebastian Perez, 8-6 at the No. 1 slot while Nicolas
Ascarrunz and Paul Michael Calhoun won, 8-5, over Joao Pedro
Oliveira and Jesus Barcete at the No. position. The Eagles earned
one point in the doubles round with an 8-4 win over Juan Carracedo
and Inaki Iriberri of the Black and Gold.
In singles, Iriberri and Carracedo bounced back after the
doubles setback with straight set victories at the No. 4 and 5
slots, respectively.
Sealing the victory was senior Paul Michael Calhoun with a 7-6,
6-0 win over Maggie Brown at the No. 6 spot for his sixth singles
victory on the season. Trojan teammate Nicolas Ascarrunz added his
fourth singles win of the year to set the final score, 6-3.
Anderson returns to the courts on Wednesday when it heads to SAC powerhouse No. 48 Wingate. The action is scheduled to get underway at 2 p.m. at the WU Tennis Facility.
