Men’s Golf Wraps Up AU Invitational in Ninth

ANDERSON, S.C. - The Anderson men's golf team finished slashed 11 strokes off its' first-round effort, but was unable to gain ground on the leaders and finished ninth at the AU Invitational hosted at the par-72, 7,005 yard Cobb's Glen Country Club on Tuesday.

Leading by six shots heading into the final round, UNC Pembroke (292-300=592) slipped eight strokes, but held off both Erskine (301-297=598) and Milligan College (307-291=598) by six strokes. North Greenville (298-301=599) slipped from second to fourth, while Spartanburg Methodist (310-295=605) jumped from seventh to fifth. Erskine College B (315-294=609) finished sixth, with Cape Fear Community College (302-309=611) closing the tourney in seventh and Pfeiffer (305-314=619) finished in the eighth slot.

"We got off to a better start than yesterday," said Anderson head coach Danny Neal. "I was glad to see the scores come down some. Arran (Setro) had a nice comeback and David (Wachter) was impressive. There are some positives to build on, but we need to come out and work hard over the next several weeks."

North Greenville's Tucker MacDonald (69-73=142) trailed UNC Pembroke's Michael Mullmann (67-76=143) by two strokes after Monday's first round, but Mullmann fired a four-over par on Tuesday, with MacDonald earning the one-stroke victory. Milligan's Mitchell Sutton (76-70=146) began the day in a six-way tie for 13th but moved into third on the strength of a two-under par 70 on Tuesday.

Setro, a senior, trimmed 10 strokes from Monday's opening round with a one-under par 71 on Tuesday and moved from a tie for 36th into a three-way tie for 16th with a two-day total 152. Wachter (79-76=155) wrapped up the tourney tied for 25th, while senior Sean Shelton (79-81=160) and sophomore Rob Warren (80-80=160) tied for 37th. Junior CJ Messana (85-81=166) finished 45th.

Competing as individuals, AU's Payden Parrish (80-87=167) finished 46th, with freshman Payton Whitlock (87-88=175) and Jon David Ozmint (88-89=177) in 47th and 48, respectively.

Following a lay-off of nearly a month, the Trojans resume their fall slate at the Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate on Oct. 7-8.
