Men's Golf Team Picked Seventh In CVAC Poll

THOMASVILLE, N.C. -- The Coker College men's golf team has been picked as the favorite to win the 2005 CVAC title, according to a poll of the league's coaches. The Cobras return their top five players from last season and have solid depth to create competition within the squad. Coker finished a disappointing fourth at the CVAC Tournament last year and followed that up with a third-place finish at the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Golf Tournament. The Cobras, made up almost entirely of freshmen last year, have another year's experience under their belts and have added four newcomers to the mix. Louis-Pierre Godin and Vincent Dumouchel led the way in the fall with classmates Brad Wissmueller and Johary Raveloarison also performing well. Anderson College, the defending CVAC champion, was picked seventh in the coaches' preseason poll. The Trojans have four of five starters returning. Second in the poll is Barton College. The Bulldogs, who have won two straight Atlantic Regional championships and finished fifth in last year's national tournaments, have six seniors on their roster. The team is led by senior All-American Josh Talton and sophomore All-American Jon Wetton. Also back are seniors Blake Eldridge and Bryan Overby. Seniors Ross Gilbert, Rider Mozingo and Joe Dvozenja are also expected to play key roles for the Bulldogs, along with newcomers Neal Jones, Nick Nosewicz and Joe Elwell. The Bulldogs, ranked 10th nationally in the preseason, are coming off a solid fall where they won one tournament by 31 shots and played well in a Division I field at East Carolina University. "We have one of the most veteran teams in the country, and we are poised to play well and make another postseason run this season," said Barton head coach John Hackney. Pfeiffer University is third in the preseason poll. After winning four of the last five CVAC championships, the Falcons have rebuilt with young talented players and once again are ranked in the top 25 in Division II. "We are a young, deep and very talented team that is extremely determined to regain the CVAC title again," said Pfeiffer head coach Jim Haughey. The Falcons are led by senior Jordan Stelmach and sophomores Matt Whelband and David Harris. They will team with freshmen newcomers Johan Blixt, Steven Clark, Mike Joy, and Aled Griffiths Rounding out the golf preseason poll 4-10 are: Belmont Abbey, Queens (N.C.), St. Andrews, Anderson, Limestone, and Lees-McRae and Mount Olive (tied).
