Wingate Fires 306 To Take AC Invitational Title

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Wingate University fired a final round 306 to overtake first-round leader Lees-McRae College and win the third annual Anderson College Invitational Tuesday afternoon at the par-72, 6,700-yard Brookstone Meadows Golf Club. The Bulldogs placed four players in the 70s in the final round to rally from a four-shot deficit. Manuel Fossas led Wingate with a 74. Jeff Cox had a 75, Lorcan Morris carded a 76, and Martin Hackney had a 79. Wingate is the third different team to win the AC Invitational in three years. First-round individual leader Dion Sirrianni of Lees-McRae shot a 75 to hang on and take the individual title with a total of 2-over 146. Sirrianni's winning total marked the second time in three years that the individual winning score was over par. Wingate won the team title with a 36-hole total of 609. Lees-McRae shot a 315 in the second round to finish second at 614. Southern Wesleyan University was third at 619. Spartanburg Methodist and Lincoln Memorial University tied for fourth at 622. Host Anderson College shot a 315 in the final round and finished in a tie for sixth with Walters State at 624. Joining Sirrianni on the all-tournament team were Paul Butler of Limestone (71-76), Aaron Hammons of Lincoln Memorial (73-74), Peter Campbell of Southern Wesleyan (72-76), and Brian Rush of Spartanburg Methodist (72-76).
