Abbey Sweeps Trojans

BELMONT, N.C. -- Belmont Abbey swept a CVAC doubleheader against Anderson University in dramatic fashion Saturday afternoon. The Crusaders took game one, 11-6 and won the second game, 5-3 in extra innings on a two-run homer. The Abbey improves to 18-26 overall and 12-8 in the CVAC, while AU falls to 17-26, 7-8 in the conference. Game one turned into home run derby as the Crusaders tagged five homers and Anderson hit two, including a grand slam in the fourth inning by Jessie Whiteside. Belmont Abbey scored three runs each in the first and second innings, but the Trojans got back into the game in the fourth with Whiteside's slam. The Abbey put a run up in the bottom of the inning and both teams scored in the fifth. Anderson scored one more in the sixth on a solo shot from Blair Carson to make it 8-6. BAC answered in the bottom of the inning with a two-run shot by Alex Udwari and a solo homer from Michael Gegorek two batters later to complete the scoring. Jason Cline allowed five earned runs over seven innings and struck out eight batters to get the win. Chris Pitts took the loss with 4.2 innings pitched and six earned runs allowed. Josh Haire went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a RBI while Udwari had two hits, a run scored and three RBI. Whiteside led AU, going 2-for-5 with a run scored and four RBI. Anderson started game two by scoring a run in both the first and second innings. Udwari doubled to lead off the second for the Abbey and scored from third when the shortstop bobbled Nick Popp's grounder with two outs. The Trojans led 2-1 going into the bottom of the sixth. After a fly out, Josh Haire singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Udwari came through again and launched a two-run homer for the 3-2 advantage. The Abbey lead was short lived, however, as Carson hit a solo shot of his own to lead off the seventh and tie the game at 3. The game went into extra innings and Anderson threatened in the top of the eighth. Andy Helms retired the first two AU batters, but John Mac White singled and advanced to third on an error, putting runners on the corners. Helms struck out Whiteside for the third out. Will Breslin walked on four pitches and Haire blasted the Crusaders' seventh homer of the day to clinch the 5-3 victory. Haire and Udwari both had two hits, two runs scored and two RBI to lead Belmont Abbey. Carson and White each went 2-for-3 in the game and Carson drove in a run and scored once. Helms earned the victory for BAC, pitching two innings with only one hit allowed and three strikeouts. Brandon Johnson, who came on in the eighth, took the loss. The two teams meet again Sunday for the third game of the series at 1 p.m. 2006 Anderson University Baseball Statistics
