Anderson Rolls Past Erskine, 12-7

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Jessie Whiteside had four hits in five trips and drove in three runs to lead Anderson University to a non-conference victory over Erskine College Monday night at Anderson Memorial Stadium. Anderson, 23-32 overall, scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back. A two-run double by John Mac White and a run-scoring single by Blair Carson staked the Trojans to an early 3-0 lead. After a home run by Robbie Knapp in the third cut the Anderson lead to 3-2, the Trojans added two runs in the home half of the third on a wild pitch and an RBI single by Whiteside. The Trojans, who have won four of their last five, added three more runs in the fourth on a triple by Kyle Lewis, an RBI single by Jonathan Pitts, and an RBI single by Whiteside. Trailing 8-2, the Flying Fleet, 33-14 overall, added a single run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to pull within three -- 8-5. But a two-run single by Tony Graham and a run-scoring double by Pitts in the seventh increased Anderson's lead to 11-5. Pitts and Carson both finished the game 3-for-5 for Anderson. Pitts had two RBI and Carson had two doubles. Senior Brad Owens, one of five pitchers designated to pitch a set number of innings in the game, pitched the first two innings to pick up the victory. Shelton Cisson had two doubles for Erskine. The same two teams will meet in the first round of the 2006 CVAC Tournament Friday at 10 a.m. at Wilson, N.C. Anderson closes out the regular season Tuesday at 3 p.m. when Lander comes to town. 2006 Anderson University Baseball Statistics
