Belmont Abbey Completes Sweep

BELMONT, N.C. - Belmont Abbey used a ninth-inning comeback to beat Anderson University 11-10 Sunday afternoon and sweep the three-game CVAC series from the Trojans. The Crusaders improve to 19-26 overall and 13-8 in the CVAC, while the Trojans fall to 17-27, 7-9 in the conference. Anderson started the game on a tear. B.J. Smith and Kyle Lewis both singled and Jonathan Pitts and John Mac White both doubled to give the Trojans a quick 3-0 lead. The Trojans added two more runs in the inning for to lead 5-0. Belmont Abbey had an answer in their half, however, and plated five runs on four hits to tie it at 5-5. The two teams traded runs over the next three innings and the score was 7-7 after four. Seth Waller led off the fifth inning with a solo homer to give the Crusaders an 8-7 advantage, which they held until the seventh. Andrew Morton retired the first batter on a strikeout but the next batter reached on an error. Jesse Whiteside doubled to put runners on second and third and Blair Carson, who hit a game-tying homer in yesterday's game two, launched a three-run shot to left center for the 10-8 Anderson advantage. The Abbey went scoreless over the next two innings, despite getting a leadoff triple from Seth Waller in the seventh. Morton sent the Trojans down in order in the eighth and ninth innings, giving BAC one last chance in their final at-bat. Ryan Ronda hit a one-out double to get things going and Nick Popp singled to put runners on the corners. Daniel Cayton hit a grounder, but the shortstop didn't field it cleanly and Ronda scored to make it 10-9 with just one out. Jordan Pegram then singled to tie the game at 10-10 and Tyler McKenzie singled past the drawn-in infield to score the winning run. McKenzie had three hits, a walk and was hit by a pitch in six plate appearances. He also scored three runs and drove in one. Ronda went 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored and Josh Haire went 2-for-5 with two RBI. Carson led the Trojans, going 3-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored, while Pitts had a hit, a run scored and drove in two. Morton earned the win for the Crusaders, pitching five innings in relief with three hits and two earned runs allowed. He also showed solid control with five strikeouts and no walks. B.J.
