Anderson Comeback Nips Jaguars

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Anderson scored five runs in the eighth and ninth innings and knocked off Augusta State 9-8 in non-conference action Thursday afternoon at Jaguar Field. The Trojans (13-22) manufactured the winning run in the ninth when Cody Nye was plunked by ASU senior Preston Crews to lead off the inning. After a sacrifice and a walk, junior reliever Trey Williams induced a grounder from Clint Neville, only to have an error by freshman second baseman Robbie Fite allow Nye to score the decisive run. The Diamond Jags (9-18) jumped out to a 4-0 lead and led 5-1 before Anderson closed to within 5-4 in the sixth. ASU took an 8-4 lead into the eighth inning after senior Chris Demons jacked his second homer of the game in the bottom of the seventh. Anderson battled back to tie the game with four runs in the eighth to set up the ninth-inning dramatics. Nye was again the catalyst, reaching on an error to lead off the frame. Blair Carson followed with the first of three straight singles before Jessie Whiteside delivered a sacrifice fly to plate Neville with the tying run. ASU junior centerfielder Kevin Kelley tripled to lead off the first and scored on Fite's RBI-single. Demons' followed with a sacrifice fly to score Fite and give ASU a 2-0 lead. The Jags doubled their advantage in the second when they took advantage of two walks, a hit batter, an error and a sacrifice fly. Anderson reliever Justin Lovvorn earned his first win of the season by working a scoreless eighth inning. Brandon Johnson picked up his first save by retiring the side in order in the ninth. Kevin Young earned the start for the Trojans before giving way to Cory Welch in the second. Will Cheatham took over for Welch to start the fourth before giving way to Lovvorn to begin the eighth. ASU junior starter Dustin Taylor allowed four runs and four hits in 6.0 innings. Ryan Emmett logged an inning of work in the seventh, recording one strikeout. Hansen faced three batters in the eighth without recording an out before giving way to Crews. Tony Graham, John Mac White and Neville each had two hits for the Trojans.
