Lady Trojans Run Winning Streak To Eight

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Senior guard Deanna Thompson made two late 3-point goals in a 27-second span to help No. 11 Anderson College hang on for a 92-82 victory over upset-minded Presbyterian College Monday night at the Abney Center. The victory, Anderson's eighth straight, improves the Lady Trojans to 9-1 overall. Anderson led by 19 -- 77-58 -- with 7:48 remaining before Presbyterian put together a 17-2 run to cut the AC lead to 79-75 with 2:39 remaining. Thompson buried her first 3-point goal at the 1:31 mark to push Anderson's lead to 84-77. After Amy Jones made a single free throw for the Blue Hose, Thompson hit another trey to give the Lady Trojans a nine-point cushion -- 87-78 -- with 1:04 to play. Five free throws by Anderson in the final minute pushed the final margin back into double digits. In the last 28 games they have scored 80 or more points, the Lady Trojans are 28-0. Anderson is now 7-0 this season against schools from the state of South Carolina. Anderson was led by sophomore guard LaShonda Chiles with 21 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists. Thompson finished with 20 points, Stephanie Ponds added 15, Kim Hausman chipped in 13, and Mikala Fogle-Wilson came off the bench to score 11. Chiles has scored 20 or more points in four of Anderson's last five games. Presbyterian, 2-10, was led by Brittany Carroll with 27 points and Rebecca Wessinger with 23 points. Carroll was 10-for-16 from the floor, including 5-for-10 from behind the arc, while Wessinger was 11-for-14 from the line. Wessinger scored 22 of her 23 points in the second half. Anderson dominated the glass, 53-34. The Lady Trojans had 18 rebounds off the offensive glass. Anderson shot 53 percent from the field in the second half to finish the game at 47 percent. Presbyterian shot 46 percent in the second half to finish the game at 41 percent. Anderson suffered 12 turnovers in the first half but still managed to carve out a 42-33 lead at the break. The Lady Trojans held a 26-17 lead with 6:27 left in the first half, but the Blue Hose used a 10-0 run to take a 27-26 lead with 4:36 left. Carroll started the run with a 3-point basket and a conventional three-point play. Anderson answered the Presbyterian run with a 12-1 run that featured 3-point goals by Thompson, Chiles, and Danielle Kincaid for a 38-28 lead with 1:18 left.
