LADY TROJANS FALL TO LEES-MCRAE IN FIRST ROUND

HARTSVILLE, SC--The Anderson University softball team got great pitching from sophomore Alex Waldroup on Friday in the the first round of the Conference Carolinas tournament, but it was enough to overcome a 3-run third inning, as the #10 seed Lady Trojans fell to #7 seeded Lees-McRae 9-1; the Lady Bobcats gathered seven hits and scored nine runs in the contest, as they were led by Amanda Dodson and Paula Fryer. Dodson was the winning pitcher, allowing just one run in six innings of work with five strikeouts, while going 2-3 at the plate with a homerun. Fryer was 2-4 with a three run homerun in the third that came on the heels of a two-out error by the Trojans that would have ended the inning with AU leading. "Alex Waldroup was great," said Trojan head coach Tommy Hewitt. "That was the best she has pitched all year, I just hate we were not able to pick her up." Waldroup got the loss, allowing nine runs, just two of them earned, on seven hits with four strikeouts. At the plate for the Lady Trojans, Amber Sutherland was 1-2 with a run, while slugger Meredith Knox was 1-3 with an RBI. Lees-McRae advances to face #2 seed Mount Olive at 2:00 p.m., while Anderson will drop to the elimination bracket to face the Erskine in a rematch of Wednesday's Beville cup showdown. First pitch is slotted for 9:00 AM on Saturday.
