TROJANS DROP TWO AT PRESBYTERIAN

CLINTON, S.C.-Pitching proved to be the difference Thursday as the Anderson University Lady Trojans (12-9, 2-0) softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader 8-0 AND 7-2 against NCAA division I foe Presbyterian College (7-5). "We could have competed a little better, but they had D-I pitching; they were just tough to hit," said Trojan head coach Tommy Hewitt. The first game was a battle between the two starting pitchers until the fourth inning. With one out and two on, Blue Hose starting pitcher Leslie Hensley stepped to the plate and smacked a two-run home run to right center, giving Presbyterian a 2-0 lead. Hensley shut down the Trojans in the fifth with two K's. Then it was the Presbyterian bats that got hot in the bottom frame. After Tate Owings walked to load the bases, Taylor Staten drilled a two-out offering to left center field, clearing the bases and giving the Blue Hose 5-0 lead. The eight-run rule would end game one for the Trojans in the sixth. In the second contest, the Trojans were able to draw first blood with a two run first inning; sophomore second baseman, Kinsley Durham provided the lone fireworks of the day for the Trojans with 2 RBI. But on the second pitch of the bottom half of the first, Blue Hose standout Amanda Miller made it 2-1 crushing a Donya Cobb fastball over the fence. Presbyterian's Ashley Ford hit an RBI single knotting the contest at 2-2. The Blue Hose women eventually took a 3-2 lead when Lindsey Trombley scored on Brittany Howell's sacrifice fly to right. Lady Trojans' pitcher Cobb, a 5'9" junior from Lexington, SC, was chased at the end of the fifth after conceding 5 earned runs on 10 hits; AU never recovered. The Lady Trojans return to action at Smethers Field on Thursday, March 5th against Lees-McRae. First pitch is set for 12 noon.
