TROJAN COMEBACK BIDS NOT ENOUGH V. BOBCATS

ANDERSON, SC--The Lady Trojan softball team faced tough pitching all day long as they hosted Conference Carolinas nemesis Lees-McRae on Thursday at Smethers Field; but two comeback bids from 4-0 down were not enough as AU dropped both fixtures of the doubleheader 5-4 (8), and 4-3. "Somedays are just not your days," said sophomore second baseman, Kinsley Durham. "We just have to play better next time." In game one, the Lady Bobcats got on the scoreboard first in the second inning when Magen West hit a solo blast over the fence in left making the score 1-0. Lees-McRae opened up the gap when they capitalized on two AU errors, piecing together a 3-run top half in the fifth. West was strong in the pitcher's circle, striking out nine on the day, including the side in bottom half of the fifth. She held the Trojans scoreless until the sixth when junior Kasey King put AU on the board with a solo shot to right center. Then, in the seventh, the AU bats started ringing, as Meredith Knox and company got the Trojan rally going to tie the game. In the top half of the eighth, international softball rules put an automatic runner on second. With an error and a walk, the Bobcats manufactured a run to get the eventual 5-4 win. The Trojans went down early again in game two; they battled back from 4-0 once more, only to fall short 4-3. The Trojans welcome Belmont Abbey to Smethers Field for another Conference Carolinas double-header battle on Saturday, March 7.
