LADY TROJANS MUST DIG DEEP DOWN THE STRETCH

ANDERSON, SC--The Anderson University softball team was supposed to have celebrated their senior day in a game on March 29 at Smethers Field against conference foe Saint Andrews; but the constant barrage of spring showers delayed that contest, and instead the Lady Trojans returned to action two days later on Tuesday, March 31 to face Division I Presbyterian, dropping two tough games to the Lady Blue Hose--an outing that has been followed by four more losses. This week the Lady Trojans begin the end of their season, and rainouts early in the year have given the young team an opportunity to make a late run. AU faces off Tuesday at Smethers Field in that senior day make-up game against Saint Andrews, a showdown with massive conference tournament implications for both teams. The Lady Trojans sit in tenth place in Conference Carolinas standings, just one game back of eighth-place Saint Andrews--a win would vault AU into a tie with the Lady Knights, and a double header sweep would put them one back of the seventh-place Lees-McRae Bobcats. Beyond the rankings and seeding though, a couple of wins would do wonders for the Lady Trojans' confidence, as the team has been in a position to win nearly every game in their current 6-game skid. There is certainly no question who the team will look to for the boost; senior catcher Kayla Williams was first team all-conference in 2006 and 2007, her freshman and sophomore years respectively. During her freshman year, Williams set the all-time Anderson University home run record with 17 jacks on the season; she was sixth in the nation in Division II with that number. Williams is no slouch at the plate this year, hitting .308 and third on the team in at-bats with 107 appearances. But with just 5 homers on the 2009 season, there is no question the senior wants to go out with a bang. For the Lady Trojans, it is not just Williams they will need; senior pitcher Katie Van Gieson joins her catcher as the only other last year player, and the right hander will need to be a stalwart on the mound down the stretch. Van Gieson is 2-3 over 9 starts this year with a 5.00 era. For the Trojans to make a move at the conference tournament title, Williams and Van Gieson could be the answer to turning close losses into critical victories. AU heads into a busy week, as they will play in 5 Conference Carolinas double headers over the next 7 days. Among teams in that stretch run are local rival Erskine College, Pfeiffer University, and Queens College---all are ranked in the top six in the conference. But it all will begin with Tuesday's double header against Saint Andrews; the Lady Trojans will take Smethers Field for a 4 pm start.
