Track and Field Wraps up Regular Season at Chanticleer Classic

CONWAY, S.C. - Paced by three first-place finishes on the women's side, the Anderson University men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up the regular season at the Chanticleer Classic, hosted by Coastal Carolina Saturday at the CCU Track and Field Facility.

A quartet of Trojan freshmen captured the top four spots in the women's 3000 meter run, with Olivia Gardner bringing home first place in a time of 11:24.29, while Grace Gerlock (11:44.27), Amber Worthy (12:13.50) and Mia Swierzs (12:20.81) claimed second, third and fourth, respectively.

Freshman Sherin Malone took the top spot in the 100 meter hurdles in a time of 15.32, while Brooklyn Watt won the discus throw with a distance of 39.27 meters.

Freshman Bari Robinson paced three Trojans runners in the 800 meter run, crossing the line in fourth in a time of 2:25.47, with junior Madison Guest crossing the line in eighth in a time of 2:37.26. Sophomore Devan Fisher placed 10th in a time of 2:43.48.

Junior Sydney Hazel led five AU runners in the 1500 meter run, finishing third in a time of 5:00.08. Robinson (5:02.88) was fourth, while Gardner claimed fifth in a time of 5:03.21. Gerlock (5:19.94) garnered seventh and Swierzs was 11th in a time of 5:29.17.

The 4x100 meter relay team of Malone, Jill Baxter, Megan Shahoud and Lauren Averitt captured third in a time of 52.01, while Baxter, Guest, Malone and Robinson also finished third in the 4x400 meter relay.

Baxter brought home third in both the high jump with a height of 1.50 meters and in the javelin throw with a toss of 31.91 meters. Shahoud claimed fifth in the long jump with a distance of 4.73 meters, while Brooklyn Watt was fifth in the shot put with a distance of 11.79 meters. Teammate Savanna Keese (10.29 meters) finished 11th. Keese claimed seventh in the discus throw with a toss of 32.97 meters and fifth in the hammer throw (39.52 meters).

Freshman Caleb Knight claimed 17th in the men's 200 meter dash in a time of 24.12, with junior Joshua Visi-Clark taking sixth in the men's 800 meter in a time of 1:58.85.

Freshman Thomas Garrigan paced six AU runners in the 1500 meters, placing third in a time of 4:05.05, with senior Parks Edwards finishing eighth in 4:15.07. Freshman Ben Boerma crossed the line in 10th in a time of 4:18.79, with fellow freshmen Jesse Patrick (4:21.82), Ned Kennedy (4:24.12) and Michael Burch (4:34.80) finishing 12th, 13th and 17th respectively.

Senior Parks Edwards (9:06.37) claimed third in the 3000 meter run, while senior Westley Wilson took fifth in a time of 9:12.64. Kennedy (9:48.67) and Boerma (9:50.32) earned eighth and ninth, respectively. Malik Brown crossed the line in fifth in the 100 meter hurdles in a time of 16.67.

Freshman Jonathan Shorter captured fourth in the 400 meter hurdles in a time of 1:00.34, with freshman Eric Hoover taking ninth in the discus throw with a distance of 32.89 meters. Hoover also claimed second in the javelin throw with a toss of 36.41 meters.

The men's 4x100 meter relay "A" team, consisting of Knight, Shorter, Brown and Hoover finished third in a time of 46.08, while Knight, Hoover, Shorter and Visi-Clark took third in the 4x400 meter relay in a time of 3:36.06. The Anderson "B" team of Garrigan, Boerma, Kennedy and Patrick finished fourth in a time of 3:40.78.

Next up for the Trojans are the inaugural South Atlantic Conference Championships, which will be hosted by Lenoir-Rhyne on Friday and Saturday in Hickory, N.C.
