Men's Tennis Team Picked To Win CVAC

THOMASVILLE, N.C. -- Anderson College, last year's undefeated regular-season champions and CVAC Tournament runner-up, tops the 2004 preseason poll as voted on by conference coaches, the conference office announced Tuesday afternoon. A lot of coaches would have liked to have had the type of rebuilding season Anderson College head men's tennis coach Brett Simpson had last spring. Using a lineup full of freshmen and sophomores, Simpson led the Trojans (15-5, 9-0) to the CVAC regular-season title and another trip to the NCAA regionals. "We brought in three new guys and held up pretty well," Simpson said. "We finished 19th nationally after spending most of the spring at 16th or 17th. We had a good solid year while we were rebuilding." The top three players from last spring - Gabor Boczonadi, Karan Doctor, and Sid Sudhakar - all return for the Trojans, who open the spring schedule ranked 17th in the country. "They all were successful last year, and they will be able to lead the team," Simpson said. "I believe we will be competitive as long as those three are successful again. They give us a strong top three in our conference. Boczonadi was 12-3 last spring in singles and 10-1 in doubles with Sudhakar. Doctor was 6-7 at No. 1 singles, and Sudhakar was 13-6 at No. 2 singles. Lees-McRae lands second place in the preseason coaches' poll. After concluding the fall ranked 16th in the Division II national poll, the Bobcats will be led into the spring season by senior Andres Intriago and junior Felipe Castanheira. Intriago is currently ranked 30th in the nation in singles and 8th nationally when partnering Castanheira. The addition of two freshmen should also make an immediate impact on the team. Lees-McRae head Coach Patric Hynes says, "We have a nice blend of talent and experience. This should help us out in the big matches." Barton also looks to contend for the CVAC title as they land third in the pre-season poll. Barton, ranked #37 nationally, returns four starters from last season's 16-6 squad. All-CVAC selections John Marte and James Rushton will look to lead a group that includes five freshmen to another top-10 finish in the Mid-Atlantic Region. Rounding out the men's tennis preseason poll 4-11 are: Mt. Olive, Pfeiffer, Limestone, Erskine, Queens, Belmont Abbey, Coker, and St. Andrews respectively.
