ANDERSON, S.C. - Coming off its first loss of the season, Anderson University men's soccer looks to rebound as it heads to Charlotte for a meeting with Queens University of Charlotte for its first match where both schools are members of the South Atlantic Conference. Kickoff from Dickson Field is slated for 5 p.m.
The Trojans
Anderson's first loss of the season came in heartbreaking fashion,
as the Trojans fell to Coker 2-1 in a rainy double-overtime
contest. Despite the loss, redshirt sophomore Andre Carle scored
his fifth goal which leads the team and is third in the league.
Freshman Aaron Roberson notched the assist on AU's lone goal, his
first assist of his collegiate career. Roberson's assist gives him
five points on the year.
After beginning the year with an undefeated mark of 4-0, Anderson looks to grab its fifth win after dropping to 4-1-1 last week. The winless week marks the first week the Trojans have failed to record a win since Oct. 15-20 of last season when AU drew with Flagler and took a road loss to Carson-Newman.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Trojans have given up just seven goals and has outshot their opponents 83-68. A backline that has consisted of Stefan Veljovic, Lars Zimmerman, Paul von Hinueber and Alex Delpy has made life easier for freshman goalkeeper Bo Haug who has 28 saves and one shutout on the season.
The Royals
After falling to Limestone in its opening match, Queens has rattled
off five straight wins, outscoring its opponents 17-4 and scoring
at least three goals in each of the wins. The Royals are also 2-0
in league play, notching wins over Tusculum (3-2) and Brevard
(5-2).
Leading the way for Queens is Erick Suarez who leads the SAC in goals with seven. Suarez was shut down in the first two matches of the season, but has scored seven goals in Queens' last four matches, highlighted by a hat trick against Brevard. QU's Thiago Andrade and Felipe Netto also rank in the top-10 in goals within the conference as Andrade has four and Netto carries three.
The Royals made a switch at the goalkeeper position after their season opener as Simen Walmann took the loss, allowing two goals and making three saves. Since making the change to Montrell Morgan, Queens has been undefeated as the redshirt junior has three shutouts and 13 saves for the year. Morgan carries an impressive 0.78 goals against average as he has seen 40 shots.
The Series
Anderson and Queens rekindle an old Conference Carolinas
rivalry, as Wednesday's meeting will mark the first time the
schools have met since 2009. In that matchup, the Trojans came away
with a 4-1 win which was the fifth win of a six-match winning
streak to begin the season. Anderson has not lost in the state of
North Carolina since last year's Sept. 1 matchup at UNC
Pembroke.
