USC Upstate Escapes With 1-0 Victory Over AU

ANDERSON, S.C. -- No. 5 USC Upstate scored in the first minute of the match and then held on for a 1-0 victory over Anderson University in a non-conference match Wednesday night at Smethers Field. "Coming off a tough game on the road Saturday and a double overtime game on Monday, I thought we performed very well," said Anderson head coach Rob Miller. "Because we're banged up a little bit, we played just 12 players. Considering our numbers, I thought we did an incredible job." "I am proud of the way my team played against the No. 5 team in the country. The Spartans, 7-0-1 overall and ranked fifth in the NSCAA Top 25, scored just 52 seconds into the match. Troy Mellanson played a ball into the box from the right wing that bounced around before Kadian Martin kicked a waist-high one-timer into the upper right corner of the Anderson net. The remainder of the match was a battle in the midfield. Neither team was able to create any dangerous chances the remainder of the first half. In the second half, Anderson goalkeeper Alex Jenkins made three key saves to keep the Trojans, who were playing their third match in five days, in the match. In the 62nd minute, Jenkins snagged a shot from Liam Slack that was aimed just under the crossbar. In the 67th minute, Jenkins stopped two point-blank shots by David Stanbra. In the 77th minute, Anderson defender Rayon Markland kick away a shot that was headed to the left side of the Trojan net. USC Upstate finished with nine shots to Anderson's seven. USC Upstate goalkeeper Ryan Cooper made four saves to earn the shutout. Jenkins finished the match with five saves. The loss drops Anderson to 4-6 overall.
